Seattle Weekly Rebuttal A story appeared in the August 29th issue of the Seattle Weekly, attempting to assert John Campbell has a hidden agenda for the school board. This is his rebuttal to that story:
Your Aug. 29 story “Rural School Board Candidate Hasn’t Been Forthcoming About his Intelligent Design Agenda” misrepresents me and my scholarly work. I am not an advocate of intelligent design, but instead a Darwinian scholar who believes in classical liberal education. I have found that students learn best when teachers have the freedom to expose them to competing ideas and arguments even in science and even if some of those arguments challenge ideas I personally favor. I taught my courses at the Universities of Washington and Memphis in that spirit. That is why I am a fellow of Discovery Institute--the scientists and scholars there share my commitment to liberal education even if many disagree with me about the status of Darwin’s theory. My Communicator of the Year Award and James Madison Prize were for a style of teaching that reflects this understanding, for my ability to offer constructive educational proposals on contentious issues and for finding common ground.
The idea that I am hiding the very educational proposals for which I have been honored is silly. The reason I did not use all three of my names “John, Angus, Campbell” was because they do not fit well on a yard sign. Voters of North Mason can be assured that as a school board member I know that it is not my place to advance any particular curriculum or educational philosophy. But I will support teachers and administrators who, in accord with their best judgment, strive for educational excellence.
